Before you begin repairing the shower diverter, you need to know how to dismantle it properly. Never pull it out straight, or use hammers or hooks to remove it. All you need to do is use the appropriate gear, which is available in any hardware store and gently dismantle the piece. Once it is off, use a wrench to bend the metal tube behind the knob, and cut the caulk surrounding the metal plate. Doing so will provide you with a clear view of the diverter, following which, you may proceed with the repairs.
Sometimes you may need to replace the O-ring to stop the leakage. As O-rings are available in a variety of sizes with minor variations, it is essential you buy the one which exactly matches yours. Pull the O-ring out and replace it with a new one. Coat it with plumber's grease before fixing it back.
In the storage area beneath your sink, there would be an attachment nut. Loosen it with the help of a wrench.
