First thing you need to do is drain the sink of all the residual water. This will reduce the possibility of dripping.
First and foremost, cut off the water supply to the shower. If you cannot locate the knob for that particular water pipe, never mind. Cut off the main water supply instead.
At the top of the strainer's hole, in the sink, there will be hardened plumber's putty. Chisel it away and get rid of every bit of this putty.
