Determine the type of diverter valve that has been used. Most commonly the types used are gate, pull down, pull up, or rotating.Once all of this has been determined, remove the old valve to install a new one. In case of a rotating valve, you will need to unscrew the nut at the stem, and remove the entire valve assembly. And if it's a gate type valve, you will have to unscrew the threaded tub spout.
